One Stock One Future

Paired with Pariveda

One Stock One Future is a non-profit organization founded in June 2016 that introduces children ages 8-18 to the work of stocks and investing. The program uses stock investing as a tool to teach the the concept of ownership.

The stock market has been the single greatest engine for wealth creation in our country's history, yet there are still millions of American citizens who do not participate in stock investing. In addition to being a source of potential wealth creation (in addition to other forms of investing), I believe that ownership is a tool that can be used to spur greater pride and responsibility among our children. Children from economically disadvantaged homes and under-resourced communities can feel a sense of neglect and abandonment by our society. We encourage them to go to school and work hard, yet they often-time don't see the results of their labor. By turning one million children into public company shareholders, they will attain a greater sense of purpose and belief in their future. A 5th grader will drive by McDonald's, and they will tell their parents, "Hey, I own that Mickey Ds." When a 10th grader pulls out an iPhone, she will exclaim, "Hey, I own Apple stock!" When a 6th grade basketball player watches LeBron James win a basketball game, they will say "I'm glad Nike chose to sponsor him!"

With One Stock One Future, we teach a basic class about money and stock ownership, then we donate shares of a company stock to each student in the class, thereby turning them into shareholders. We then follow-up with the classes to provide deeper understanding of company ownership and analysis.

What new functionality we are looking for

My biggest challenge is that I am only able to connect with students when I am directly in front of them in the class. In order to fulfill my mission of turning ONE MILLION youth into shareholders, I need to be able to engage with them once my class is done. I would love to have a One Stock One Future branded youth friendly mobile application that gives students a chance to continue looking at stocks and the stock market outside of my class.

How the new functionality will help

After I complete class, it may be months before I get a chance to see students again face-to-face. During this time, the app will help the students stay engaged with news, information, images, stories, and other content that brings the stock market to life. After my sessions, each students becomes a shareholder in a specific company. If the class chooses Apple, I would love for the student to be able to go into the app, select Apple as their One Stock One Future company, and then the app would then pull in content and other information about their company.

How our organization will use the technology

One Stock One Future will use this technology to give students the ability to further their understanding of business, money, stocks, and ownership from an early age. It will allow the organization to stay on the mind of the students beyond the 90 minute classroom session.

Who will use the technology

This new technology is for the direct benefit of the new youth shareholders. I have ideas for the app, but I would love to work with the Nerdery team to flesh this out a bit more. For example, perhaps a kid is at the store and takes a picture of a product (e.g. a pair of Nike's), then the app could then pull up information about that company share price and other useful information.

Ownership means something, there's a sense pride that comes with it. Instilling this type of pride into our youth is a meaningful initiative One Stock One Future has taken. I was excited for my son to be apart of the endeavor. It gave him insight into the stock market and investing. It also gave him the perspective of being a consumer. He now pays attention to the brands he uses and thinks about their relation to the stock market. He is also more aware and conscious of saving money. The experience was rich with information and wealth!

My hope is that through One Stock One Future more and more young will continue to become stock holders!

Financial literacy is a crucial step to the economic betterment of our youth today. Through OSOF, Rendel S is on a mission to create educational and ownership opportunities for youth and we, as a society, will be better as a result. OSOF shows kids it's not just cool to own Nikes but also to own Nike inc and fostering this thought process will enable them build wealth with stocks and ,subsequently, the various other asset classes. I look forward to the future success stories this program will produce.

One Stock One Future (OSOF) is filling in the gaps left by an over-burdened education system. As we leave the comforts of school we so often ask "why didn't I learn this in school?". 'This' being the everyday tasks of adulthood: budgeting, money management, wealth creation.

I contributed to OSOF to encourage these lessons in our youth: to always have a plan, to always work at building a future and to always be an owner - never owned.

Mr. Solomon is brilliant, hard working and the perfect leader for this program, someone our youth can see themselves in and aspire to become.

I have known Rendel for quite some time, personally and professionally and consider him a great friend and great leader. He is doing an amazing job building and running this organization and I believe it will only continue to grow and thrive with our help and under his leadership.

I donated to OSOF because I firmly believe that the earlier children are exposed to the concepts of entrepreneurship and investments, the better chance they will have at a progressive future. I also believe that Rendell is the best person to team students about the importance of ownership over consumerism as he has been a strong and consistent advocate of the topic to his peers and his community for many years. I'm looking forward to the day when my children can benefit from the work of Rendell and OSOF.

One Stock One Future is a wonderful way of engaging students on something they don't typically have access to at school: financial literacy and the value of ownership. Alongside a high-quality education, students can use lessons learned with the OSOF curriculum to plan for their futures and strengthen their communities. I'm excited to see OSOF grow and positively impact more youth!

I met Rendel Solomon roughly two years ago and he has always been passionate about providing opportunities to expose youth to different life situations that will lead to greater financial literacy. The best thing about One Stock One Future is that the whole concept is about teaching youth how to be smarter with their money. By using very relevant products and concepts, this program exposes students about the practice of using your money in a way that makes your money work for you. The students don't see this as financial literacy, and they don't see it as "work". This program has taken a necessary concept that is not taught in underserved communities and made it interesting and relatable.

Personally, my roots are in Louisiana. I was born there, my parents are from there, and a large majority of my family is still there. We didn't come from money and we were never exposed to these concepts. My Mom lived to be 44 and never invested... and was never able to have that conversation with me about it.

My first actual conversation with someone who invested was when I was in college and a classmate of mine told me that his parents made him work but didn't make him pay for the things he wanted. Instead, they worked with him to invest almost everything that he made and taught him to be financially literate. This classmate told me about how he took his money and purchased Apple shares as a teenager back when they were trading at around $80.

This concept, this material is critical to youth developing wealth over the term of their life. It's not about becoming rich through investing, and it's not just about investing... It's about being smarter with your money.

One Stock One Future is essential and needed for today's youth. As an African American male, in the corporate world, I wish there was a program like this available for me when I was growing up. Financial literacy is crucial to development and will help shape the lives of many of these children being touched through this program. With Rendel Solomon leading the cause, I have no doubts that this will be an invaluable experience for many of Chicago's youth. I will continue to support Mr. Solomon's efforts.

As a child, my parents had the foresight to buy me stock in a couple of companies. Those stocks grew and grew. And by time I was an adult, I had a few thousand dollars in those accounts (compound interest, reinvesting dividends). It was a great testament to the powerr of investing early. Even though my parents didnt have a lot of money and didnt invest very much for me initially, it still was a great investment. I donated to this cause to give the same opportunity that I was afforded by my parents. The earlier we can get our children involved, the greater rewards. Getting an early start in investing is one of the biggest steps to being successful at it. This program grants these children that first huge hurdle.

I invested in One Stock One Future after hearing about Rendel's first class and the plan he had to bring the program to one million children. Not only has Rendel come up with an inspiring mission and implemented a terrific program, his expansion plan is solid and magnifies the impact of One Stock One Future's work. The children involved learn about ownership and take pride in their knowledge, and they will inspire their peers in turn to be curious and seek financial education. One Stock One Future is a highly worthy not-for-profit in a city that is working to do better by its children. Proud to be a OSOF supporter!

Six years ago, I met Rendel Solomon when he served as President of LINK Unlimited Scholars (LINK)Associate Board. LINK is Chicago's oldest college and career success program focused solely on African American youth. I was impressed with his leadership and interpersonal skills while guiding a young professionals group to advance this organization's cause to move economically disadvantaged and high potential African American youth to, through and beyond college.

Since then, we have partnered on a number of social initiatives, including One Stock One Future (OSOF). OSOF is unique in the nonprofit sector since it turns youth into public shareholders. When he pitched the concept, I was sold and dedicated to its success. In only a year, OSOF has served over 200 youth and raising funds to advance its goal of turning one milling youth into owners.

OSOF is THE partner to provide this generous in-kind support. With the tech support, OSOF will be able to take its narrative to inspire and serve more youth in the US to dream big and believe that they too can be become owners one share at a time. I am proud to share my comments as an OSOF Advisory Member and to a friend that's making a positive impact in the lives of our youth.

I support One Stock One Future for several reasons:
First, I know the founder Rendel Solomon and have had the opportunity to work with him in our industry, Private Equity. When he started this venture, I supported him 100% because I know that he is dedicated to providing our children with the skills and tools to understand finance.

I also support One Stock One Future because so many children of color (even adults) are never introduced to finance at all - not in school, and not even in the home. Growing up as a child, all financial information in the family was never discussed around me. I had no idea about the cost of things, like my school tuition, or what plans my parents had for saving and investing - even though my father was/is an Estate Planner and Insurance Agent, he never began talking to me about that until I was much much older. Teaching our children at a young age about investments, savings, etc. is imperative and will provide them with a strong foundation that so many of us never received.

I am confident that One Stock One Future will impact this young generation and those that follow in a mighty way!

One Stock One Future (OSOF) is a social imperative. I grew up on Chicago’s west side through the 80s and 90s and know all too well the struggles associated with navigating life with a perpetual consumer's mindset. Subliminally, my peers and I sunk deeper and deeper into a mentality of powerlessness, the place where the worst life choices are carried out.

The economic deconstruction of predominantly black communities across the country has had and still has crippling financial and psychological ramifications. Enters OSOF. Far beyond economic empowerment, OSOF‘s core mission is helping restore the sense of self worth among young people, their families, and their communities.

I've had the honor of witnessing Rendel's vision for One Stock One Future grow from an idea-in-incubation to a movement-in-the-making. Rendel's passion for empowering and inspiring youth to be wealth creators has been remarkably clear from the moment we met three years ago. Because of my faith in Rendel's commitment to turning one million youth into public company shareholders, I jumped at the opportunity to serve on OSOF's board.

Sharing in the experience of OSOF's first cohort was one of my 2016 highlights. The students were engaged and excited. It was amazing to behold! And I'm thrilled to say that OSOF has continued that momentum with each student cohort that has gone through the program. The best is yet to come.

Gifting our children with a foundational understanding of personal finance should pay dividends to their future and society's future as a whole. One Stock One Future aims to transform those whom have been historically financially inept to the financial adroit. Kudos!

As a kid growing up, I was fortunate that my parents and grandfather instilled in me the important lessons of: never spend everything you earn, always keep a budget, and always try to avoid debt if you can. Those lessons were extremely important through life, and I am thankful everyday because not everyone was fortunate enough to be taught the value of saving and budgeting as a kid.

One thing that I wish I learned earlier in life, was the importance of ownership and investing. My parents and grandfather were always leery of investing in stocks due to the fact that they didn't know much about it and so they avoided it. They would always make comments about how "I don't trust those stocks, or, "I don't want to lose my money." It was until later in life when my brother & I chose to learn about it on or own after taking classes later in high school/college and reading on our own the importance of investing. We tried to teach our parents, but old habits die hard.

This is the reason why OSOF is so important. It will expose young people (especially young people of color) and under privilege communities to the importance of ownership and investing. All though its never too late to learn, I always wonder where I would be today, if I knew as a kid what I know now about investing and stocks.

I have been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to support OSOF since the beginning of the organization. I am still amazed at what the organization has accomplished and the impact that it has had in such a short period of time. As someone who grew up learning about the importance of financial literacy, I see firsthand the benefits that education has had on my life as an adult. I will continue to support OSOF because I believe that planting this seed in young people early in their development has the ability to transform families and communities.

One Stock One Future is an amazing, innovative non-profit that is doing great work making young, underprivileged kids shareholders. Rendel has designed a great curriculum to "get to the basics" of investing and equity ownership. He makes it relatable, fun, and REAL. I had the pleasure of seeing his first cohort become shareholders in Nike.

I first heard about OSOF on LinkedIn and immediately reached out to Rendel to commend him on this awesome work. As someone who didn't truly develop any financial literacy until well into adulthood, I am thrilled to see OSOF on a bold mission to create 1 million new shareholders. I think OSOF will fundamentally change our nation for the better as we bring up new generations of children who not only experience the pride of company ownership, but also learn about a new way to participate in our economy and build wealth.

I am very proud of this program. People are looking for unique ways to provide engagement with students to teach financial management. This program not only teaching financial management skills while also pushing for empowerment and giving students a sense of ownership they ordinarily don't get from other places.

One Stock One Future (OSOF) mission of instilling the children of under-served communities with the fundamentals of investing and financial literacy is important work. The practical, hands-on nature of the program set it apart and gives it unmatched potential in its ability to change lives. And with Rendel at the helm, continuing to provide his unique brand of visionary leadership, the sky's the limit for OSOF.

Ever since I was a little boy, my dad always preached the importance of investing and saving money. For anyone who is interested in accumulating wealth, financial literacy is an absolute must. I can honestly say that I cannot think of a better person to teach financial literacy through ownership than Rendel Solomon. I interned at the asset management firm Rendel works for and I had the pleasure of reporting directly to him. Every time we spoke of One Stock One Future, you could see the fire in his eyes. Rendel is truly committed to this mission and giving back to his fellow brothers and sisters. With ownership comes pride. There is no doubt in my mind that One Stock One Future will have a tremendous impact on young lives.

I donated money to One Stock One Future because, as a parent, I know how important this organization's message is to young people like my son. Financial literacy is not taught in schools and it is an often overlooked lesson at home. What a wonderful start it is to have these insights early in life! I want the organization to grow, expand its reach, and touch young people far and wide. I believe in the mission and its Founder!

OSOF is important for many reasons...not only to educate children on what ownership in general means, but the value of wealth accumulation, how markets (and in turn, corporations and capitalism) work and to empower young people and their parents through stock ownership. I am lucky to be involved and will continue to support in any manner. Also, because barriers to entry of investing are typically so high, the value of being able to own stocks at marginal levels creates a significant abundance mentality for all.

One Stock One Future is incredible! Rendel not only brings a very relevant and important curriculum to young people, he makes it come alive. Kids engage in activities and discussions that are thought provoking and transformative. They are then able to pick and choose their own stocks! You can't get any more tea than this! I believe students who are able to engage in this experience are given financial tools that can literally change their lives. I am grateful for Rendel's knowledge and his dynamic approach to teaching. One Stock is one of a kind!!

I have been incredibly inspired by One Stock, One Future and Rendel's leadership of the organization. It's amazing how the impact goes beyond the young people receiving OSOF stock gift cards - Rendel's advocacy for the organization has started lots of valuable conversations around ownership and investment in youth. It has motivated people to purchase these type of stock gifts for the young people in their lives as well. Kudos to Rendel for contributing to community investment in this way!

I did not learn about stock and ownership until I was a teenager. The incentive was to get good grades and earn stock. At the time, being a stock owner meant more about having money rather than ownership. I love how One Stock One Future emphasizes the importance of ownership, which is key to wealth and something that if learned early, makes what could be viewed as impossible, possible. My 8 year old daughter is now a stock owner because of One Stock One Future. While stock ownership and financial litreracy is important to us, I'm not sure that she would know all she does now if it wasn't for the work, dedication and effort of Rendel and OSOF. We are forever grateful and a huge supporter!

One Stock One Future is providing a platform for our youth that would otherwise be absent. The impact of an organization like One Stock One Future has become essential in an ever increasing world of consumerism. There is a direct correlation between ownership and pride. Pride in one's self and pride in one's community. And OSOF is a great start!

Empowering the youth, who in many cases feel powerless, will produce a generation of informed consumers and powerful decision makers.

Have you ever heard a great idea rooted in an authentic motivation to help the community and backed by strong capabilities and an enlivened, sincere delivery? That was my initial impression when Rendel spoke to me about One Stock One Future at an event hosted by the University of Chicago Association of Black Alumni. This is an amazing organization with the much-needed goal of sparking leadership and financial skills in those that have been distanced from the idea of stock ownership. I am excited to be an OSOF advisory council member and I continue to look in amazement at this organization's growth and its empowering impact in the community!

When I was a child my mom let me help her prepare her taxes. Well, at least she let me see what she was doing. "Help" is probably an #alternativefact. She also did her best to give me an usually generous allowance. Basically, she would put $100 in my savings account at Teacher's Credit Union when she got paid. I still remember setting up that account - #108696 was the account number. I had to hit certain goal before I could spend it. Moreover, she instilled giving back financially. Furthermore she also bought us this game called Pitt. The entire concept of the game was cornering the stock market in a bull market. Later in high school I got involved with Junior Achievement and competed in their city-wide stock market competition. The point is, I never knew how blessed I was to have been raised with a healthy amount of financial literacy.

To witness to this incredible vision that Rendel has brought to life with OSOF is simply an amazing experience. Financial literacy and wealth creation is one of the greatest gift you can give to children, it is indeed life altering. OSOF is a powerful tool to change lives and enhance the future for all.

I have had the pleasure of witnessing the OSOF program. Students are engaged from the very beginning and at the end of the program, so many students lined up to speak with Rendel. The students are eager, curious and very receptive to learning about stocks. This app would create a continued pipeline for learning for students and also for their parents/guardians who also may be interested in seeking more information. OSOF is a catalyst for life-long wealth creation. This app, in my opinion, has the ability to provide scale, awareness, and access to those who need it most.

I love what One Stock One Future is doing to help reshape the conversation around wealth and ownership in communities of color. The notion of savings and investing are critical to long term of financial stability, yet these topics are not taught in school. As a minority growing up in a lower class neighborhood, one key word changed my trajectory- exposure. One Stock One Future is an amazing program that exposes youth to both the wonders of personal finance and equity. The program encourages them to think like an owner and remain intellectually curious about investing. Time is the greatest multiplier of both compound interest and financial education. By teaching children the basics of stock early and keeping them engaged via an app, OSOF will pay dividends for generations to come.

I invested in One Stock, One Future and asked Rendell to share one of his sessions with my daughter and many of her friends, because I believe deeply in OSOF's important mission. For most people of color, financial literacy is not inherited and rarely discussed in the household or while going through primary education. On a personal level, I wasn't aware of very basic things such as credit scores and how to properly use and manage credit cards until after graduating from college. If Rendell is able to achieve his goal of making one million children of colors stock owners by helping them become fluent in basic finance instruments, the language of the capital markets, and how wealth is generated - the long-term impact on their lives could be transformational. And in this mobile-first world, the most relevant and accessible way to help spread this message to these digital natives will be through engaging apps and social-enabled platforms. I urge the team at Nerdery to work with Rendell to help drive long-term impact in the lives of kids of color through the One Stock, One Future program.

As someone that was raised in an urban setting, the idea of ownership was not preached to me growing up. I invested in One Stock One Future on the concept alone. I did so because I believe in Rendel's dream of shifting the focus of today's youth from being simply a consumer to becoming an owner. Ownership is the main driver of wealth creation. I look forward to watching and supporting, Rendel and One Stock One Future as the organization starts ONE MILLION under-served and economically disadvantaged youth on their journey to wealth creation and economic empowerment.

Every balanced financial plan needs an investment component. All too often in our communities youth are not taught the basics of investing, much less owning what they invest in. As a professional in the industry with experience in the private and non-profit sector, I have seen the pitfalls to the lack of financial literacy as well as the benefits and importance in financial literacy education. The work that Rendell Solomon and One Stock One Future is doing is integral to students for their personal lives and advancement as well as to maintaining a stable, inclusive, and secure economic environment in communities as a whole. This is a program that can and should be multiplied throughout IL and the U.S.

Growing up, I was always curious about what drove economic shifts around me and who got to decide who would be an owner. Unfortunately, when I asked questions, most around me could not tell me why that would be the case. Even worse, I was discouraged as to gaining the knowledge I sought. However, this changed at 11 when my mother got me a WSJ subscription. On the front page of the first issue I received, there was a profile article on Warren Buffet. Reading that article and the rest of that paper that weekend changed my life. Currently, I'm a MBA student at Columbia Business School (Buffett's Alma mater) and I'm looking to *continue* my career in investing. The lessons from this exposure still make an impression on me 18 years later.

Through One Stock One Future, Rendel is doing the RIGHT work. Similar to many, I was taught simply to go to school, get good grades, go to college and get a good job. As I've been fortunate fo see the benefits of entrepreneurship, I'm committed to supporting the success of ventures like OSOF that help shape and heighten the expectations of young men and women. For many reasons, the concept of ownership is seldom taught to the youth, specifically in the minority community. Teaching ownership at an early age is a fundamental disruption in education that is long overdue. Ventures like OSOF pave the way for promising young men and women to understand the power of ownership and secure a seat at the table sooner in life.

One stock one future is an amazing program with great leadership. Knowing that Rendell Soloman is at the forefront of this program in teaching financial literacy to the you is an amazing attribute to the community. I am extremely proud to know this the hard work the program will help elevate our youth is something that I support. Investing starts at home, and he is investing in what is important. Amazing work.

One Stock, One Future has the potential to change a generation. It changes the students by reframing their understanding of value. It changes their sense of self and self-worth. It changes communities by prioritizing investment over consumption. Supporting OSOF means supporting leveling the playing field of generational inequality by inspiring ownership. I cannot think of a more noble or necessary cause.

Our Mission

The mission of One Stock One Future is simple is to plant seeds of wealth across the country by turning ONE MILLION under-served and economically disadvantaged youth into public company shareholders.
